Alphstates(formerly known as Babelfish) are critically acclaimed for their stunning mix of ambient electronica and catchy left field pop. Catherine Dowling, Gerry Horan and Karl Odlum formed Babelfish in April 2001. Babelfish released their debut EP "Sometimes" on their own label Magi Records. They had no grand plan, they just wanted people to hear their music. The result was very encouraging. "Sometimes" was lauded by Tom Dunne on Today FM, A listed on 2FM, Spin FM as well as making playlists on FM104, 98 FM and a number of other Dublin and nationwide stations. After the release of Sometimes in November 2001, they continued to record. Their main objective now, however, was to perfect their live show. The beginnings of their debut album was recorded in Black Box, France (recorded in by The Frames, Gemma Hayes, and David Kitt) in May 2002. babelfish received a rapturous applause alongside Sinead O'Connor at a sell-out show at the Olympia in June 2002. They played to a packed house at Witness in July, followed by their debut nationwide tour. "Conversations with robots" was released in November 2002 and again the critics approved. They were nominated for a second time as Witnness Artist of the week on Tom Dunne's Petsounds. They also made playlists on 2FM, Spin and were voted both, best Irish Band and Best Song on Phantom FM, Ireland's biggest independent music station. babelfish were also voted in the top ten Irish releases of 2002 in the Irish Times. Sometimes was also voted in 'Tom Dunne's Best Single of 2003' alongside Coldplay, Doves, the Streets etc Babelfish were selected for the Phantom Rock Compilation Volume 1, alongside PJ Harvey, Massive Attack, Death in Vegas, Radiohead, Blur and a range of other International acts. One of the men behind U2's famous Elevation remix, Chris Agnew of Agneli and Nelson fame, has recently completed a remix of Addicted.
